Whitehorse

Designed by: Eco-centric Design with Energy/heating consulting by Craig Olsen.

This family home is designed for sub-arctic climate of Whitehorse, YT (60°N)

Passive solar concepts:

  • orientation of living areas to south w/ relatively large windows.
  • utility spaces on North side as buffer.
  • super insulated walls (R60)
  • max. 10% windows of total wall area

Main view to North, so Living room has both south & north exposure.

The sun room was added to enjoy sun in shoulder seasons, when air is still cold, but sun is warm.

This home employs hybrid construction techniques.  The east wing is framed with staggered 2” framing and foam insulation.  The west wing (central area of the home) is timber frame.

The recreation room, mud room, studio and workshop are separated from living areas by double high entry hall, to help eliminate sound transfer.
